📘 Syllabus and Examination Details for Amateur Station Operator’s Licence

This document covers the examination syllabus for the award of:

  • Amateur Station Operator’s Licence – Restricted
  • Amateur Station Operator’s Licence – General

🧪 Part I – Written Test (for both Restricted and General)

The test includes two sections:

  1. Section A: Radio Theory and Practice
    (Exempted for applicants with Engineering/Science degree/diploma having studied electronics or telecom)
  2. Section B: National and International ITU Radio Regulations

🎧 Part II – Morse Test (Only for General Licence)

8 WPM Morse Code – Sending and receiving (both must be passed simultaneously)


📝 Detailed Syllabus

🔹 Restricted Licence – Written Test

Section A: Radio Theory and Practice
  1. Elementary Electricity and Magnetism
    • Passive devices: Resistors, Inductors, Transformers, Capacitors
    • Active devices: Diodes, Transistors
    • Kirchoff’s Laws, Ohm’s Law, Power & Energy, Conductors & Insulators
    • Magnetism: Permanent and Electro-magnets
  2. Alternating Currents
    • Sinusoidal AC, Peak/RMS/Average values
    • Reactance, Impedance, Power factor
    • Series & Parallel RLC Circuits, Resonance
    • Rectifiers and smoothing circuits
  3. Semiconductor Devices
    • Use of diodes/transistors in amplifiers, oscillators, detectors, frequency changers
  4. Receivers
    • TRF & Superhet Receivers, CW Reception
    • Receiver parameters: sensitivity, selectivity, fidelity, interference, AVC, Squelch
  5. Transmitters
    • Low power TX, crystal oscillators, semiconductor TX basics
  6. Radio Wave Propagation
    • Frequency bands, EM Spectrum, wave types
    • Ground/sky/space waves, skip distance/zone, fading
  7. Aerials – Common types for TX and RX
  8. Frequency Measurement – Frequency meters and measurements
Section B: Radio Regulations
  • Indian Wireless Telegraph Rules (1973)
  • Amateur Service Rules (1978 + amendments)
  • Relevant ITU Radio Regulations, including:
    • Emission Designation – Appendix I
    • Phonetic Alphabet – Appendix 14
    • Frequency Allocations – Article 5
    • Distress, Urgency, Call Signs – Articles 19, 30-33
    • Q-Codes: QRA–QUM
    • Abbreviations: AA, AR, CQ, DE, OK, etc.
  • Standard Time and Frequency Signal Services

Duration: 1 hour
Passing: 40% in each section, 50% overall


🔹 General Licence – Written Test

Includes all topics from Restricted plus:

  1. Principles of Communication
    • Analog/digital basics, modulation types (AM/FM/Pulse), demodulation
  2. AC Theory
    • Transformer basics, losses, impedance matching
  3. Semiconductors & Transistors
    • Biasing methods, symbols, characteristics
  4. Power Supplies
    • Half/full wave & bridge rectifiers, smoothing & regulation
  5. Transmitters & Receivers
    • Basics of facsimile and TV signal transmission/reception
  6. Propagation
    • Ionosphere layers, day/night frequency, critical frequency
  7. Aerials
    • Radiation principles, microwave band antennas
  8. Space Communication
    • Basic satellite communication principles
Section B: Radio Regulations

Same as for Restricted Licence.

Duration: 2 hours
Passing: 50% in each section, 60% overall

Morse Reception (8 WPM)

  • 200 characters plain text (letters, numbers, punctuation)
  • Test lasts 5 minutes (plus 1-minute practice)
  • Max 5 errors allowed or 1-minute error-fre
